RIAI Awards 2019

TODD Architects are delighted to share Rathview Mental Healthcare facility came Commended in the RIAI Public Choice Awards, in the Wellbeing category. Thank you to all who voted for our project!

2019 marked the 30th year of the prestigious architecture RIAI Awards, with 23 Award Winners announced across 14 categories. All of the projects on the shortlist have been designed by RIAI-registered architects, and were completed in 2018, with the shortlisted projects decided outcome determined by the 10,000 votes cast, the Public Choice Award.

“The wide variety of projects included in this year’s shortlist demonstrates the diversity of great work being carried out by architects at home and abroad.  Their contribution is invaluable in terms of enriching our daily lives – our homes, schools and colleges, hospitals and the public spaces we enjoy”.

David Browne, RIAI President

“The standard of entries was very high this year. The jury have been visiting the shortlisted projects throughout the country and had a challenging task. The shortlist was made up of exceptional projects including residential homes, commercial spaces, schools, heritage locations and public spaces and it’s encouraging that Irish people recognise the value that Irish architects add to all aspects of the built environment, supporting Ireland’s educational, economic and social infrastructure.”

Carole Pollard, FRIAI, Chair of the Jury

Moving on Up: TODD Architects ranked 64 in AJ100 2019

TODD Architects have been officially ranked 64th in the Architects Journal 100 top UK practices of 2019.

This indicates the practice has moved up four places from last year (68th), and marks the 10th (non-consecutive) year we have been included in the this prestigious top 100 list of UK practices.

The AJ100 survey, examines areas such as fees, salary levels and reflects international activity, practice diversity and Awards won throughout the year. The latest results are also politically significant this year as they reveal a resilient performance from the UK’s largest architectural practices, which as a cohort saw increases in architect numbers, salaries and fee income during 2018- despite the imminent shadow of Brexit up ahead.

We regard this important accolade as a tribute to our hard working and ever growing teams across our three offices in Belfast, Dublin and London and to our Management teams efforts in continually investing in and working to develop and expand our sectorial portfolio and client base. Congratulations to all for your commitment and dedication, we recognize our team is our most valuable asset.

Other significant outcomes from the AJ100 revealed that BIM is now practically universal, with 93 per cent of practices declaring that they made extensive use of it, the highest proportion of any individual technology – compared with 59 per cent five years ago and Revit Architecture is now very widely employed, being extensively used by 86 per cent of practices, up from just over half five years ago. We are proud to be counted as one of these innovative and forward thinking practices who utilize both design technology systems.

AJ100 practices are showing an increasing concern with their staffs’ happiness. Asked to allocate 100 points across six factors that might be considered to contribute to the success of a practice, they once again ranked client satisfaction and repeat business highest but ‘being a good place to work’ is now in second place, swapping places with ‘creativity’.

These survey findings accurately reflect our own TODD Architects practice ethos and values of prioritizing client satisfaction, being a good place to work and team creativity, values which we have always regarded as the true signs of practice progression and success.

Investment heralds ambitious growth phase: Three New TODD Architects Shareholders

TODD Architects has announced a part-management buyout (MBO) by three existing employees. Jim Mulholland, Daragh Coleman and Andrew Murray have purchased equity from existing directors Peter Minnis and Paul Crowe, both of whom are staying on in the business in an executive capacity to provide strategic direction and remain as major shareholders.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Managing Director Paul Crowe said:

“This promotion and opportunity to invest in the practice recognises the significant contribution Andrew, Daragh and Jim have made to the firm’s growth and success in recent years. Furthermore, it reflects our strong belief that they are the right team to work with us in continuing the growth and sustained success of the practice. We are delighted to welcome them as fellow directors. This will future proof the business, enabling us to maintain and strengthen our market position as one of the UK and Ireland’s leading architecture firms. It also provides a fantastic platform for the next stage in our growth. Having assembled what we now believe to be one of the best senior leadership teams in the business, we very much look forward to continuing to serve our diverse client base through continued design excellence and the delivery of high quality buildings.”

Peter and Paul will continue in their existing roles at the practice, ensuring it achieves sustained growth with the new shareholders. This will include continuing to win major projects across the UK and Ireland in the three strategically-located offices: London, Belfast and Dublin.

Paul Crowe said: “Our long-term commitment to the offices in London and Dublin has allowed us to orbit around the best projects and develop the specialist expertise required to deliver them, including a dedicated aviation team within the practice.”

TODD Architects was advised throughout the transaction by leading law firm A&L Goodbody. Peter Stafford, corporate partner at A&L Goodbody in Belfast, said:

“TODD Architects is an outstanding example of an indigenous firm that, through an unfaltering commitment to quality and innovation, has grown its footprint across the UK and Ireland to compete comfortably with international practices and continues to add to its impressive portfolio of prestigious and award-winning projects.”

New Principal Katie makes Parfitt fit for our London Studio

TODD Architects, one of the UK’s leading 100 practices, is delighted to announce the appointment of Katie Parfitt as Principal of its London office.
Katie will head the team at the practice’s premises in Fitzrovia, developing new clients as well as running the office and working with colleagues on individual projects.

Explains Katie: “Although TODD Architects have had an office in London since the late 1980s when Barrie Todd was one of the first architects to set up in Clerkenwell, we’ve remained relatively small, using resources from across the practice to support our clients. Whilst that’s allowed us to offer a huge breadth of experience across all sectors and throughout the UK, my role is to expand our presence in the capital and develop the London office team.”

Previously an Associate at Stride Treglown, Katie is a qualified Architect and has worked on a range of projects including several schools in London, student accommodation schemes in Brighton and Southampton, and challenging mixed use residential and retail developments in London and across the UK. In addition to her architectural qualifications, Katie also holds a masters in Project Management.

Continues Katie: “I was attracted to architecture from my first work experience placement at a practice in Cardiff. I love listening to people, what they want from a building, and using my skills to meet or indeed exceed their expectations. At TODD Architects, the quality of their designs and their focus on creating user centred buildings, really fitted into that view. And working with a lively, energetic and imaginative team also makes my job immensely enjoyable and rewarding.”

TODD Architects London office currently supports a range of clients in a variety of sectors, with existing projects including the continuing redevelopment of Bristol Airport, a 70,000sqft office building in Brighton and the delivery of some 600 apartments for leading London developer Ballymore at Royal Wharf in East London.

Concludes Director Peter Minnis: “Katie’s appointment will drive our London office growth, further enhancing TODD Architects offer of technical expertise and innovative design across the UK. With the continuing confusion attendant on the UK’s exit from the EU, we believe our structure, with offices in Dublin, Belfast and London, puts the practice in an ideal position to support our clients during the process and whatever its outcome.”

Estates Gazettes feature Katie’s appointment here.
