80 years of Luton

London Luton Airport is celebrating its 80th birthday this year.

Luton Airport opened in 1938 .During the Second World War its was used by the RAF and for a short time was the base for 264 Fighter Squadron. It was the birthplace of affordable air travel from the 1950’s onwards, and in 1990 was renamed London Luton Airport.

Today it is the fifth largest airport in the UK and one of the fastest growing in Europe, employing over 9,400 people and carrying 16 million passengers annually to 140 destinations in Europe, Africa and Asia.

TODD Architects are proud to be a part of London Luton Airports more recent history having worked on its £150m masterplan expansion and transformation, including the redesign, refurbishment and extension of terminals. This has been the largest single investment in the airports history and it’s all focused on making sure passengers have a quick, easy and enjoyable experience with LLA.

In 2018 LLA will officially open the newly extended terminal which will host a selection of great shops and restaurants, and will also open a new boarding pier, containing eight new boarding gates, which will make journeys quicker for passengers.
