In 2020 TODD were appointed to the BHSCT Major Works Framework following a competitive procurement process. The competition was for the design of new Day Elective Surgery, Ambulatory Care Centre with four new theatres, an Ophthalmic Centre, Endoscopy Centre and associated facilities.
The site for the competition was the Mater Infirmorum Hospital, a historic landmark building in Belfast which has been in use since the 1880’s and which now provides acute care.
Our winning approach considered the site in context of the existing listed ‘Mater’ building, the adjacent listed Crumlin Road Gaol as well as the functionality and connection of the new development within a constrained city centre site.
The design considered adjacencies, flows, separation of patient, visitor and staff and created distinct new departments around a central courtyard which allows natural light deep into the building whilst a historic listed stone wall provides the setting for a patient and visitor garden.
