QUB’s New Business School at Riddel Hall

Designed and delivered by TODD Architects, QUB’s new geothermal-heated Business School at Riddel Hall is a fantastic example of contemporary architecture that is practical operationally whilst remaining exceptional in terms of sustainability performance and architectural merit.

A low energy, ecologically sensitive design approach was promoted with a BREEAM Excellent standard achieved.
The external material palette is consciously restrained, combining red clay brick, bronze aluminium framed floor to ceiling glazed screens (ensuring a connectivity for building users with the surrounding woodland) and red cast stone, the latter principally used to delineate colonnades at the upper and lower level entrances.

Internally board marked in-situ concrete walls and exposed concrete floor soffits predominate within circulation areas, with floating ceiling rafts enhancing acoustic performance and timber sheeting used to identify study booths and other internal elements - including the accommodation stair within the central atrium.

Terrazzo floor tiling further reinforces the approach of using natural materials within the interior, that combine to create a calm, robust and understated aesthetic.

Q. What attracted you to architecture?

A. I wanted to be involved in making the places where we all spend our lives. It seemed challenging, tangible and purposeful.

Q. Favourite project to date?

A. Metro Building offices behind the City Hall in Donegall Square South Belfast. A product of a great client and great contractor – now an all too rare combination.

Q. Best advice you ever received?

A. When I was struggling to make decisions on matters of detail whilst designing my own home, a friend directed me towards Alvaro Siza’s essay “Living a House”. This encouraged an acceptance of the chaos of domestic life and the need for tolerance in construction. I have Siza to thank for skirting boards instead of shadow gaps.

Q. What attracted you to architecture?

A. I had a passion for Art and a strength in physics at school. Architecture provided an excellent forum to apply both of these creative and practical skills and also hopefully have a positive impact on the urban environment.

Q. Favourite project to date?

A. A recent milestone at TODD Architects has been seeing construction works commencing on the The Loft Lines development in Titanic Quarter in Belfast. I look forward to my continued involvement in this hugely prominent development!

A.. My dad’s advice has driven a lot of my decision making in life….’better looking at it than looking for it’ 😉

Q. What attracted you to architecture?

A. I have always had an interest in good design and along with the technical aspects construction. Possibly developing from my Lego enthusiasm as a child!

Q. Favourite project to date?

A. Royal Wharf was my first major project in London. The project consisted of a 314 apartments over 4 buildings, constructed using a prefabricated panel system which was delivered to site from Eindhoven!

Q. Best advice you ever received?

A. Keep it simple! This can be applied to all aspects of the design and delivery of projects . Often the simplest solution is the most effective

Nigel Murray I Newly appointed Associate Director

Nigel Murray I Newly appointed Associate Director I #TeamTODD

Q. What attracted you to architecture?

A. I have my brother to thank… or blame. It was ultimately seeing him working on projects, models, and presentations in his early years in Architecture school that struck a chord with me, and the rest as they say is history.

Q. Favourite project to date?

A. One of my first projects was a graphic design studio in Hollywood on the outskirts of Belfast. A steep learning curve both in terms of the interpersonal relationships and communication required to drive the team and in the ‘making’ and realisation of the ideas. More recently, Riddel Hall Business School for Queen’s University has just completed - it was hugely rewarding to be involved from inception through to completion in such a well-designed and crafted building.

Q. Best advice you ever received?

A. A constant reference point for me is a quote by Aristotle: "The more you know, the more you realise you don't know." It is both a reminder that it’s ok to not know the answer and to ask questions, and equally to ensure to stay inquisitive to learn and continue to grow.
