Bridge House, Guildford, Surrey
Guildford is the historic and vibrant county town of Surrey. It has an attractive town centre but, on the periphery, where Bridge House is located, the historic character and urban grain has been seriously compromised by the road network and modern building insertions of varied quality, scale and type.
The Bridge House site itself is arguably a western gateway to the town, wonderfully located directly adjacent to the listed Onslow Bridge and overlooking the River Wey. It also sites less than a minute walk from Guildford Station (30 minutes to London Waterloo) which is about to undergo a major redevelopment, that will include 438 new homes.
The best that could be said about the existing building is that it is very much of its time, being a typical example of the decorated post modern office architecture that prevailed in the 1980’s. It really doesn’t take advantage of its setting and offers a wonderful redevelopment opportunity either as a refurbishment / extension or indeed a new build.
