New Teaching Block, Ulster University, Coleraine Campus

As part of the continuing redevelopment of its Coleraine Campus, University of Ulster identified a need to provide additional general teaching accommodation for undergraduates.

The practice was appointed through the University’s framework to design the new block, which includes classrooms of differing sizes, a 250 seat lecture theatre, open access student hub / IT area and support spaces.

The three storey building is articulated into identifiable elements, further reinforced by the materials selected for each, with the curved frontage of the linked theatre faced in timber, the open teaching / study areas enclosed in full height glazing, (with horizontal louvres providing solar control) and the support spaces finished in white rendered masonry walling. The scheme achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.

The scheme received a commendation in the 2016 RSUA Design Awards.
